Assessments

We offer two types of assessment which can be face to face or on-line:

  1. Full speech language and communication assessment. This includes analysis of speech, receptive and expressive language and social communication. It provides a report detailing these and outlining what therapy the child requires. Please note it doesn’t have to be Small Talk that provides this therapy, it is a useful tool for others. This cannot be used as a statutory report as it is not written in the same way. The report is a full pictures of speech, language and communication and any needs arising from that.
  2. Statutory assessment for EHCPs or tribunals. These are very detailed, quantified and specified reports which outlines the educational needs which arise from the child’s speech language and communication needs. We do an executive summary which is designed to make it easy to lift into sections B, E&F of an EHCP.

Part of our investigation, before we write the report, is to read all the other reports so that we might be able to cross reference. We will need to liaise with and interview the child’s school. Please note school visits if necessary are an additional cost.

Please note that the cost of the report does not include attendance at the tribunal which is a separate charge.

Screening
We offer different screening assessments. Please note these are screens and not diagnoses:

Auditory Processing disorder (APD): we have extra training in auditory processing disorder which allows us to screen a child’s hearing and carry out a full screen of their auditory processing skills alongside their speech, language and communication. Which will give a full picture of their ability and needs which may include referral to one of the UK APD centres. We can identify difficuties for school adaptations from the screen which can be included in EHCPs.

Autism: the screen includes a full speech language and communication assessment plus CCC 2, DISCO and Brief 2. An option is to progress to the full diagnosis if the Therapist has concerns following the collating of the results.

ADHD: the screen includes a full speech language and communication assessment plus CCC 2, and Brief 2. Unfortunately, we do not have capacity at present to progress to the full diagnosis if the Therapist has concerns following the collating of the results. A psychiatrist is necessary in case medication is required.

Therapy
We work at our clinical base, children’s homes, nurseries coma schools, and many other places where the child feels comfortable. We can offer weekly therapy sessions or a bespoke package of support. We work with others in the child’s life so we can make as big an effect as possible.

Diagnostic
We work as part of a multidisciplinary team with a clinical psychologist to complete a full autism assessment. A comprehensive screen is necessary prior to this (as detailed above) to make sure that this is a cost effective way to proceed. The screen includes the DISCO or ADI assessment, CCC 2 and BRIEF 2 as well as a full speech language and communication assessment. If these indicate that further assessment is necessary, then a diagnostic assessment with the clinical Psychologist would be carried out to complete the diagnosis.

Play and attachment sessions
Parent-Child Attachment Play (PCAP)

This is an innovative early help model that focuses on strengthening the parent/carer (or other adult) – child relationship.

Positive Play

Allows children and young people a space to express and communicate feelings and difficulties in their lives, through a variety of media in constructive ways Helps young people feel good about themselves, and raise self-esteem by providing activities that look at their strengths and by valuing what they do and making it special. Help young people acquire the complex range of life skills needed to achieve their full potential.

Safe and Sound protocol

This is an auditory intervention designed to reduce stress and auditory sensitivity while enhancing social engagement and resilience. It presents music that has been acoustically modified based on a specific algorithm that triggers physiological states of safety and trust. Calming the physiological state helps to promote social engagement and self regulation and further therapy is enhanced or even accelerated.

This can be delivered digitally at home at your own pace supervised by the therapist.
